Drought

Cracked Mud Tiles on a Dried Lake Bed. Death Valley National Park, CA.

This is one of those places probably only landscape photographers will be ecstatic to see! ...I was one of them! LOL! This was taken 2+ years ago when I had the opportunity to come explore this lesser visited area of Death Valley National Park.

Dancing Aspen

Curvy Aspen Trees Seemingly Dancing in the Forest. Colorado.

Taken with side lighting to accentuate the curves of these aspen trees. This picture is processed a bit darker and is intended to be viewed with black background.

Liquid Floral

That Bluish Water of Brúarfoss. Iceland.

On our Iceland trip, we saw countless waterfalls, but Brúarfoss was the one that I did not want to miss! Since it is not officially designated as a "Tourist Destination", this place does not get the usual crowd that you may see in other popular places around the Ring Road. On both occasions that we came here, we had the luxury to have the place all to ourselves! Good times!

One small drawback though is this place is not as easy to find. We had to pass through a barb wire fence and hike a wet and muddy "trail" to get here. But the reward of seeing this blue waterfall was more than worth it! Hope you enjoy this view as much as I do!

Autumn at Maroon Bells

Alpenglow on Maroon Peaks with Fall Colors Surrounding the Lake. Colorado.

Maroon Bells are said to be the most photographed mountain peaks in the entire North America, and it is not hard to see why! With the peaks draped with a fresh coat of snow contrasting the warmth fall colored aspens surrounding the lake and image of the peaks mirrored on the water, this scene is easily an instant postcard to anyone standing here! Naturally, it is also one of the most visited spots in Colorado! So...Needless to say, I made sure to pay this place a visit on my first ever trip to this state, and I am glad I did!

Well, you have probably seen thousands of pictures of this place by now, but I am still going to show you one more today...because it is just too GORGEOUS! ...Won't you agree?

Berry Veil

Portion of Berry Creek Falls. Big Basin, CA.

It requires quite a bit of work to see this fall as this waterfall is situated in the middle of a 10.5-mile loop trail. While the fall is beautiful and all, I wonder if I would ever exert that much effort again to see a waterfall! :-) Hope you enjoy this view as much as I did!

Until next time...

Under the Maple Canopy ( 秋意濃 )

Japanese Maple Tree in Autumn. Portland, OR.

This is perhaps the most photographed tree in Portland! After shooting the "classic" composition, I moved around and this view caught my attention! To accentuate the tree, I shot this using wide aperture to make the surrounding maple leaves out-of-focus and used it to frame my subject.

Wizard Hat ( 巫師帽 )

Milky Way Core Aligns with Martin Beach Sea Stack. Half Moon Bay, CA.

The shape of this sea stack reminded me of Harry Potter movie! On certain month in the year, the milky way core aligns with this rock structure, making it looked like a wizard hat casting magic spells to the sky!

Sand Towers ( 沙塵塔 )

Sand Tufas in Mono Lake. Mono County, CA.

Mono Lake is known for its unique rock formation along its shores. But this bunch of sand tufas that is farther inland attracted me the most due to its delicate state yet rigid appearance. These tufas that were formed underwater and now exposed after the lake water receeded had created such unique formation that is pretty and artsy in its own way.

Allure

Abiqua Falls in Autumn. Scotts Mills, OR.

A near hundred-foot waterfall that is surrounded by basaltic amphitheater, Abiqua Falls is certainly a spectacular sight to behold!

On my recent trip to Portland, I finally made a "mini-adventure" to visit this secluded spot. While not hard to find, it was quite a bit of hassle to get to! It rained the days prior to my visit and actually had light shower during my hike down, making the already very steep trail muddy and felt more slippery. But seeing this unique view was well worth all the effort and more! My only regret was not able to stay here longer as the rain started pouring again soon after I took this shot. I came home happy nonetheless knowing I had checked off yet another item on my photography's bucket list!

Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

New Website!

After YEARS of using this blog as my main site to showcase my photos, I have finally decided to host my own photography website which I had done for quite some time back! Check it out if you have a moment! It is at: https://www.wilsonngphotography.com

Going forward, I will try to include more stories about my photo trips on this blog aside from the usual photo posts that I had been doing, so don't "unfollow" me here just yet! LOL! Anyway, let me know what you think of my website or if you encounter any issues using it. The image below is a partial screenshot of my website! Thank you for your support!

Ice Age ( 冰河時代 )

Mendenhall Glacier Ice Cave. Juneau, Alaska.

Geared with helmet and ice-trekkers, my friends and I set out on an unguided day-long adventure, going through strenuous and steep terrain on a rainy and windy day to explore ice caves carved by water stream on this ever-shifting landscape of Mendenhall Glacier. While the second half of the hike was a bit brutal due to bad weather condition, exploring this glacier cave was truly an exhilarating and memorable experience! Standing here, everything looked so blue...but there was definitely nothing to feel blue about that day!

Color Palette ( 彩色板 )

Intimate View of Wheat Fields. Palouse, Washington.

While wider views of the rolling hills were mesmerizing to look at, I also wanted to capture some close-up views of these seemingly manicured wheat fields during my visit. As the sun rose, the constantly changing interplay of lights and shadows painted these hills with different hues and rendered it with an abstract feel that you see here!

Updates: This picture was a finalist in the Outdoor Photographer's Shot with Tamron Landscape Photo Contest 2015 and was featured on the October 2015 issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine.

Corazon ( 夕醉心湖 )

Heart Shaped Lake with Mount Shasta in the Background. Mount Shasta, CA.

This is definitely one of my favorite views around Mount Shasta. The hike was a bit steep but not too difficult. However, hiking back in the dark was quite a challenge as there was no actual trail to follow for a big portion of the hike. Nevertheless, the view here is definitely worth the trouble! :-)

Farm Ville ( 金麥拂曉 )

Wheat Fields of Palouse. Palouse, Washington.

This is the place where the famous Windows XP wallpaper was taken! I enjoyed a beautiful morning watching the sun casting lights and shadows on these rolling hills. The texture on these seemingly manicured wheat fields is amazingly beautiful!

Winter Escapade ( 冰峭寒影 )

Frozen Waterfall Along a River Canyon. Alberta, Canada.

Winter was pretty much non-existent in California the past season, so it was quite delightful to experience the cold winter breeze when we were up there in Alberta. Although it was also relatively warmer for that time of the year during our visit, it did drop to -18C on our last morning there! We spent some time hiking and exploring, and this was one of the places we visited. The river is fed by glacier melt water, thus giving the frozen waterfall a cool blue tone you see here.

Spring Purple Carpet ( 花紅滿山春 )

Wild Owl's Clovers Covering the Slope of the Hill ( 貓头鹰三叶草 ). Livermore, CA.

Spring has sprung! It's wild flowers season again! My friends and I explored the East Bay hills nearby and found these flowers covering an entire facade of the hill. Apparently, this flower is native to California and are blooming in many places now! What we like about this particular bunch was how the setting sun lit the flowers, putting a radiant glow rim light on them!

Have a wonderful Spring season, everyone!

Updates: This picture won the Pashadelic Photo of the Month "Wildflowers" Contest in May 2015.

Inertia ( 神秘風動石 )

Moving Rocks of Racetrack Playa under the Milky Way. Death Valley National Park, CA.

This has to be one of the most mysterious places that I had visited thus far. Rocks here move by themselves and inscribe long tracks along this dried lake bed. While there were many theories and explanations being thrown around, this geological phenomenon was never explained until August of 2014 after scientists began using GPS-equipped rocks and time-lapse cameras to monitor the movements in 2011.

I drove over 2 hours off-road to reach here. While the ride was bumpy and not fun, the view that awaited me at the end of the trip was more than rewarding.

Do-Re-Mi

Sunflowers Backlit by the Setting Sun ( 燦爛向陽花 ) .

These sunflowers were all facing the same direction and seem to be greeting visitors with a big smile! While floral pictorial is not my forte and the clouds were a bit too thick than I wanted, I thought this is fitting for New Year's day post! ...May our lives be filled with more "sunshine" in 2015! Wish you all a Happy New Year!

A Magical Moment ( 夢幻時刻 )

Classic View of Golden Gate Bridge Veiled with Fog. San Francisco, CA.

A very popular composition but still a personal favorite! The bridge tower looks so huge when viewed from this vantage point, it felt like I can touch it by just reaching out my hand! I have been trying to capture this view of the bridge with low fog. Came here 3 times recently, but did not get the fog level and/or density I wanted on my first two attempts. This morning's high clouds with silky smooth deck level fog finally made this image that I had in mind came true! I also like the gap in the foreground fog which allows the foot of the North tower to be visible and showed more height to the scene.

The optimal light lasted for merely few minutes, but watching the fog danced around the bridge during those brief moments were really magical! Hope you like it!

Morning Tranquility ( 碧水映丹霞 )

Sunrise at Bonsai Rock. Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

On my first visit here a few years back, the serenity of the scene captivated me instantly. After I got into photography, I always thought to come back here to capture this the way I first saw it. Unfortunately, conditions never exactly lined up on my numerous return trips. Not to be denied, I made another attempt on one ordinary evening when I saw that calm weather and cloudy sky were forecasted. I drove tirelessly for 5 hours to get here before sunrise. Standing still in cold ankle-deep water, I waited anxiously for the "moment" as I observed the tranquility of my surrounding. As the sun rose, patches of clouds started to illuminate with colors while the lake water mirrored the hues above it. I hold my excitement and triggered my shutter happily, realizing that I have finally captured the shot I had in mind for a long time!
