Tangent

Milky Way over Bonsai Rock  ( 銀河系下的盆景岩石 ) . Lake Tahoe, NV. September 2012.

Life has been going off on a tangent. Many thoughts entered my mind while I waited to capture this image. It's stunning to realize how many lives are so different because of one insane decision.

This was from a planned 24-hour photo trip to shoot the milky way at this popular but quite hidden spot. I manually composed and focused the shot in the dark, then waited for the milky way to fall to the spot I wanted. I am pleased to have captured this image exactly how I wanted it. It was a fun trip. I was tired, I was sleepy and hungry, but it was very rewarding to be there and to see this in person. I was surprised that my camera even captured some of that faint green colored airglow above the horizon to the left that my eyes could not see. But one thing I do know was the stars were definitely out in full force this night.

Until next time...

Armageddon

Sunset during a Monsoon Thunderstorm. San Jose, CA. September 2012.

This year's drought has created this awesome but also eeri looking terrain from a dried lakebed right in the middle of Silicon Valley. I have been waiting to shoot here after I learned about this location a few weeks ago but the weather had been too boring since that time until last Wednesday when a brief thunderstorm passed by. Needless to say, I made sure I have my camera ready.

I arrived right when the sunset was getting good. Having only clear and overcast skies the last few weeks, I was only hoping for a decent sunset "with clouds". But, oh boy! What a dramatic light show we got that night! The sky literary looked as if it was on fire! Right at this time, a small patch of rain cloud went into the middle of the scene and added more drama to it. The highly contrasty red/yellow colored sky combined with the cracked mud terrain reminds me of alien planet landscape they show in Sci-fi movies.

Safety Warning: If you come here, be very careful when walking around the lakebed. The surface of the mud may look hard, but might still be soft inside. I already have 2 photographer friends who sank knee deep into the mud here and needed help to get pulled out. I was afraid to become the next victim so I took a compromise with my composition and did not venture too far out during the shoot.
