Bay Bridge and the Pilings

Here's familiar view of the Bay Bridge. I have shot this scene long long time ago, but there was something about it that I didn't like and enough to make me redo it. This time, I timed it so that the crescent moon and venus (the bright star above the closest tower) are visible in the shot during the twilight hour. Have a nice week, everyone!

Mountain Light

View of Alpenglow from the Lake. Eastern Sierra, CA. October 2012.

It was a great day in the Eastern Sierra's high country. An early season snow storm has just passed. The morning breeze was crisp, and the sky was all dramatic! Here's a picture that I have wanted to capture for sometime. I was actually here last year but the condition was not right. This time, I got some nice pink-colored sky to complement the scene. As I waited for the condition to peak, many photographers started to line up around the lake. Clouds were moving fast, as wind also started to pick up. Soon after, the sky started turning red, and pink. Colors were in all directions! It was hard to contain my excitement. As soon as the first light hit the summit, it was showtime!

I like how the foreground rocks lined up with the reflected light from the alpenglow which then leads to the mountains. The submerged rocks along the shore also added some interest to the overall scene.

Heaven On Earth

Golden Gate with Marine Layer Fog  ( 海相層霧裡的金門大橋 ) . San Francisco, CA. September 2012.

THIS is one reason why I love San Francisco. Witnessing this scene unfold was just exhilarating and simply magical! Truly a heavenly place on earth. How I wish I can freeze the time to feel the breeze, listen to the melody of the fog horns, watch the fog rolls in and out of the bay, record every color, every detail, and to just live in the moment. What a great way to start my day!

Tangent

Milky Way over Bonsai Rock  ( 銀河系下的盆景岩石 ) . Lake Tahoe, NV. September 2012.

Life has been going off on a tangent. Many thoughts entered my mind while I waited to capture this image. It's stunning to realize how many lives are so different because of one insane decision.

This was from a planned 24-hour photo trip to shoot the milky way at this popular but quite hidden spot. I manually composed and focused the shot in the dark, then waited for the milky way to fall to the spot I wanted. I am pleased to have captured this image exactly how I wanted it. It was a fun trip. I was tired, I was sleepy and hungry, but it was very rewarding to be there and to see this in person. I was surprised that my camera even captured some of that faint green colored airglow above the horizon to the left that my eyes could not see. But one thing I do know was the stars were definitely out in full force this night.

Until next time...

Armageddon

Sunset during a Monsoon Thunderstorm. San Jose, CA. September 2012.

This year's drought has created this awesome but also eeri looking terrain from a dried lakebed right in the middle of Silicon Valley. I have been waiting to shoot here after I learned about this location a few weeks ago but the weather had been too boring since that time until last Wednesday when a brief thunderstorm passed by. Needless to say, I made sure I have my camera ready.

I arrived right when the sunset was getting good. Having only clear and overcast skies the last few weeks, I was only hoping for a decent sunset "with clouds". But, oh boy! What a dramatic light show we got that night! The sky literary looked as if it was on fire! Right at this time, a small patch of rain cloud went into the middle of the scene and added more drama to it. The highly contrasty red/yellow colored sky combined with the cracked mud terrain reminds me of alien planet landscape they show in Sci-fi movies.

Safety Warning: If you come here, be very careful when walking around the lakebed. The surface of the mud may look hard, but might still be soft inside. I already have 2 photographer friends who sank knee deep into the mud here and needed help to get pulled out. I was afraid to become the next victim so I took a compromise with my composition and did not venture too far out during the shoot.

Happy 75th Anniversary

Golden Gate Bridge's 75th Anniversary Fireworks. San Francisco, CA. May 2012.

Over the years, Golden Gate Bridge has been a symbol of hope and dreams for many. For most people living in the Bay Area, she is a beauty that we admire. As for me, she is one of the many things why I love San Francisco.

Just the past Sunday, many of us were treated to a magnificent fireworks show as we celebrated her 75th Birthday! The festivities run for 2 days and ended with this 30 mins fireworks display. There were quite some planning done to get here to shoot that day. Due to roads closure in various places for the festivities, my photographer friends and I were worried about parking situation in the city, so we'd decided to come here really early. There were also some debate on where to shoot. In the end, we chose to be up on top of the hill due to concerns of possible low fog and wind direction after sunset. The compromised made here was that I had to deal with the hill blocking the lower part of this image...well, we can't have everything, so I am not complaining.

Overall, it was a spectacular light show, and I hope this picture has captured some of that excitement. I don't know how they are going to top this when she turns 100th, but I hope I will still be in the area to witness it again.

Gates of Hope

Golden Gate Bridge with Rolling Fog. San Francisco, CA. April 2012.

It's been a while since I last posted a picture on here. I have been monitoring the fog condition at Golden Gate Bridge for quite some time and had gotten skunk a few times. When I saw that the condition might work last week, I woke up at 4AM and headed there. As I approached the bridge, I was greeted by thin layer of fog. Knowing that the fog will get thicker in the next 2 hours, I got really pumped! As I drove up the hill, I saw many photographers were already setup and shooting, I quickly parked my car and setup, aimed at the bridge and shot away! For the next couple of hours, all my problems and worries disappeared as I enjoyed watching this natural phenomenon unfolding in front of me. For a while, life was full of hope again! (Hence the title)

Here's my take of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge with the low fog rolling in to the bay. The city of San Francisco and Bay Bridge are visible in the background. The small island on the upper left is Alcatraz which was getting covered in fog.

Alone

Seascape glow after sunset. Santa Cruz, CA. January 2012.

This was my second time to this spot. The tide was too low on the first attempt. This night, it was actually a bit too high and this was the closest I could go without risk getting wet. The long shutter speed made the scene looked more calm, as opposed to the splashing waves I saw in person. The tiny dots you see on the foreground rocks are actually mussels. I kinda like how they added interest to the overall feel of this image.
